Artist Spotlight: Quiet Man

A bearded man lies peacefully on the grass in a sunlit park, wearing a blue shirt, brown trousers, and a blue baseball cap. Behind him is an old brick wall partly covered in greenery.

This Saturday, 2nd August, Quiet Man plays an intimate show at a still to be announced location in Glasgow. Read the latest edition of our Gigs in Scotland Spotlight with him below...

For anyone reading unfamiliar with your work, can you tell us a little bit more about you and the journey you’ve been on to where you are now?

London-born now Glasgow-based for the last 3 years. When my (now) wife and I moved up here I bought a piano on gumtree for £35 and moved it from Kilmarnock into our flat. The whole first year I didn’t have anything set up to record I just sat at that piano and wrote all the things I think I probably had been needing to. With no expectation or pressure. Carving out that space for myself has massively informed what I’m up to now and I’m grateful to Glasgow for enabling that ultimately.

You just released your new single ‘Pretty Tough’ this past Friday, what was the inspiration behind this track?

Some nasty fallout last year with a close family member. It all got ugly and repetitive and that song is kind of me unpacking the root cause of that. Trying to understand where we’re both coming from but also ultimately expressing how bleak it made me feel.

You’ve had some incredible support slots across the UK & Ireland with the likes of Fred Again.. and Medium Build but this week’s show will be your first headline - how does that feel?

Pretty f***ing wild to be honest. I don’t love the word ‘headline’ as I think it implies something grander than what we’re doing. I’m honoured to get my first chance at putting on this show though and can’t wait to sing some people some sad songs.

The location of your show on Saturday is still to be announced and it’s set to be a really special one! Without giving too much away, could you give fans an idea of what to expect?

Expect nothing. Hope for everything.

What’s next for you? Do you have any exciting plans you can tell us about?

Working on a bunch of new music for projects and releasing a follow-up single to “Pretty Tough” which comes out next Friday, August 8th. Plenty of shows in the diary that I’m working towards (Pitchfork Festival Paris, Live at Leeds) and supporting S. Carey at the Hug & Pint on August 31st!

There's very few tickets remaining for Saturday's show - grab yours here!
