Artist Spotlight: BEL
Hailing from the small town of Clovis, California, Isabel Whelan aka BEL crafts nostalgic songs with honesty and attention to detail. She occupies the intersection of indie rock, pop, and folk, while taking cues from the likes of Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, and Mazzy Star.
We've set our spotlight on her this week as she prepares for her first tour in the UK, including a very special show at The Poetry Club, SWG3, read all about it below...
You’ve mentioned before that last year held a lot of firsts for you; first tours, first festivals etc. You’re obviously continuing on that this year with your first Scottish show, what are you looking forward to most about coming to play here?
Yes! I feel really grateful to continue on these new experiences this year in my music. I’m so excited to explore Scotland and to meet all of you!! I can’t wait to play my new music and dance with everyone!
We’ve got your newest single Nos Despedimos/ Window Shopping on repeat at the moment, can you tell us a little bit more about how these tracks came about?
‘Nos Despedimos’ is my first bilingual release! My mom is Argentine so I grew up speaking Spanish and always knew I wanted to incorporate it in my music. It’s a breakup song I wrote for my sister. The chorus translates in English to "we said goodbye happily" but in the context of this song, I meant it more as a "good riddance," like we were happy that guy was out of the picture.
‘Window Shopping’ is about future-tripping over someone you barely know and being let down when they don’t live up to the idea you had of them in your head. Just totally spiralling over a crush. I think we’ve all been there!!
What do you hope listeners take away from the new single?
I hope listeners takeaway that breakups can be a beautiful thing for growth. It's easy to feel like time was wasted with someone when it doesn't work out, but it's helpful to take it all as an opportunity to learn about yourself and accept the love from all the people around you who are there to lift you out of it.
Tell us about something you’ve always wished someone would ask you about?
I wish someone would ask me “would you like to go on an all-expense-paid trip around the world and explore and eat really amazing food?” But no one’s asked me that yet…
We can’t wait to see you perform at The Poetry Club, what can fans expect from the show?
They can expect to dance and maybe cry, maybe laugh a bit, hear a sneak peak of unreleased music along with all the new stuff!!! :)
