Artist Spotlight: Nina Nesbitt
Scottish musician Nina Nesbitt rose to fame at a young age with her disarming, candid pop - championed by stars including Taylor Swift & Reese Witherspoon. She now returns with her best album yet, Mountain Music, which you can listen to here.
We spoke about all things new music, returning to Scotland, and the upcming Mountain Music tour with Nina ahead of her gig at The Old Fruitmarket on Friday 18th October.
Your new record ‘Mountain Music’ has just been released - the inaugural release on your label Apple Tree Records. How was the experience of writing, producing and releasing this?
It’s definitely been my favourite album to make. I wrote majority of it alone at home, just on piano or guitar. It was a great experience learning to trust my gut instincts again. The recording process was totally different to anything I’ve done before. We recorded the album to a 1970s tape machine with a bunch of musicians in a room. It was great to be able to strip it all back and leave room for character and flaws on the record. This album makes the first release on my own record label so that was really exciting and also LOTS of hard work!
You’ve got such a history with Glasgow and we’ve loved watching your journey through your gigs here; from King Tut’s to TRNSMT. How does it feel to be back on another headline tour?
Thank you! It’s always so exciting. Glasgow is always such a highlight for me on tour. It’s also the penultimate date on this run which will make it even more special. I can’t wait to be able to enjoy myself afterwards too — and most likely end up at the Blue Lagoon.
We’re obsessed with the throwbacks you’ve been posting from fans on your signing tour last week - what’s been your best Glasgow gig memory?
One of my most memorable Glasgow gig moments was playing the O2 ABC back in the day. It was a venue I used to go to as a fan and to finally play it and sell it out felt like a huge ‘look mum! I made it!’ moment. I also brought my best friends up on stage to sing with me which felt extra special.
The wonderful Katie Gregson-MacLeod and Kerr Mercer will be joining you next week. Do you enjoy having other Scots on tour with you (keeps you out of trouble with the Scottish humour right!?)
Yes! I can’t wait to have them both there. Katie Gregson-MacLeod is one of my favourite artists and has become a friend of mine. I’m so excited for my crowd to discover her and become obsessed. I also recently came across Kerr so I’m buzzing to have him there too. His voice is amazing.
The Old Fruitmarket is such a special venue and we can’t wait to see your show there. What can fans expect from the show?
It’ll be my first time headlining there which makes it extra special! They can expect to hear my new album, Mountain Music and some golden oldies hidden in there too. I’ll be bringing my full band this time, we’ll be playing very freely — no click or track — so each show will be slightly different! Anything could happen…
